Branding and Growth

Branding is a term used in the corporate world to promote a particular product or service through advertising or using a particular image. A strong market position is derived by ensuring that the ideal product is provided for the right person. Branding is used in business, marketing and advertising but for now, I would like to focus on personal branding since more emphasis is placed on business branding and the individuals that work in these organizations are just as important as the companies.

Personal Branding

Corporate Training Materials states that personal branding is identifying your assets, characteristics, strengths and skills as an individual. Personal branding is important if we intend to individualize our attributes. We should try to differentiate ourselves as the product in the marketplace so that we can easily achieve our objectives. This could be the teacher, lawyer, farmer, etc. That we aspire to be. We need to first define our brand, then position that brand, and manage the different aspects of it.

SWOT Analysis

A SWOT analysis forms one of the basic components of a business whether it’s a company or a product line. The strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats are regularly analyzed in order to assess competitors and formulate strategies or effect changes that will keep the company or organization on the cutting edge. The goal of any organization is to differentiate itself in the marketplace. The company defines its brand and effectively manages it in order to position that brand in a different way from its competitors. Research and development play an important part in providing information and then using it to plan strategically for future growth.

We usually evaluate our performance by doing introspection and retrospection but if we do a SWOT analysis on ourselves, we could be in a better position to employ strategies that will help us become more marketable.

S– Strength: evaluate our strength and try to build on them. W– Weakness: analyze our weaknesses and employ creative ways to improve our image. O– Opportunity: look for opportunities to grow our personal brand. T– Threats: guard against threats that are potential barriers to our success. (threats to our health and wellbeing)

What’s Your Brand

God created us in His own image but we clothe ourselves for different reasons. (cover nakedness, protection and identity) In business, the packaging of a product has an important role to play in attracting customers. The same way our persona has an effect on job interviews or our place of employment. How we adorn ourselves gives a clear indication of our personality and character. There is no harm in applying the principles of branding to our personal image to improve it.

We are God’s Masterpiece

The Scriptires tell us that we are God’s Masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago. (Eph. 2: 10 NLT) We live in a special period of grace be cause we were created by God for good works. The Psalmist declares that we are fearfully and wonderfully made because we were created in His image and are branded to reveal His glory. We are His greatest assets. 1 Peter 2:9 established that we are His chosen generation, a royal priesthood and a holy nation. In Christ, we are anointed and powerful. Therefore we can channel His blessings by becoming doers of the word of God. He has a uniquely designed plan for our lives and it can be manifested if we put our trust in Him. His plan is that we should prosper and be in good health, even as our soul prospers. Whatever we do, we should ensure that we fulfill His purpose and let His name be glorified in our works.

These six steps will help us in branding our image:

  1. Define your brand. Decide what you would like to do early.
  2. Set goals. Set your goals and work toward achieving them.
  3. Conduct your research. Whatever profession or career path you choose, do your research by looking at other persons in your chosen field.
  4. Draft your strategic plan. Based on the analysis of your research, you should be able to draft a strategic plan to chart your way forward (high school, college, university)
  5. Marketing strategies. Look at the attributes you would want others to see in you and what you can do to market your skills or talents ( social media, community involvement)
  6. Manage your brand. Conduct frequent assessment of your current position and progress to see what needs to be changed.
